It’s been nearly a year but grandmother and Children’s author Janet Kiefer’s heart still races when she remembers that terrible early morning phone call. Video of a stroller smashed, laying on it’s side, broken glass, and car wreckage ran across the television screen. At the hospital she finds her daughter, Amy Berard in coma clinging to life, her 4-week-old grand-baby Gabby’s skull fractured, and her son-in-law Dan’s legs severely injured. Even the family dog hadn’t been spared by the texting driver of the Toyota Tundra that ran the family down on a Tempe Street.
Miraculously, the family survived. Amy suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, but now thanks to world renowned Barrow Neurological Institute she is back to work teaching high school biology 10 hours a week.
“Amy struggled to live; she had to relearn everything, this journey is long and painful and not over yet. We’re hoping to give back to Barrow now, and help others like Amy,” said Kiefer. She is donating 100% of the proceeds from two readings of her latest Children’s books “Can I Play with You?” and “Curious Freckles” to Barrow.
“Our family wants to say thank you for all of the compassion shown to us. Our family is grateful to all the first responders, EMT’s, doctors, nurses, medical staff, clergy, friends, family, Chandler Unified School District, the extended community and Barrow’s Neurological staff.”
